There are different symbols to let you know the status of each thread or board.
A crown with a jewel has new threads since the last time you visited that board.
A plain crown has no new threads since the last time you visited that board.

A white cloud is a thread that is open.
A grey cloud is a thread that is locked.
A white cloud with a sword through it is stickied.*
A grey cloud with a sword through it is locked but sticked.*
*Stickied means that the thread stays at the top even if there are no new posts.
