I noticed we've been having a lot of birthday threads pop up lately. It's very nice to have birthday wishes, but to me it seems like if a member hasn't posted on the boards for over a year or more, there is no need for them to have a special birthday thread. The exception to that might be if it is a member who has been very active in the past and other members either know them or remember them. It's not out of the realm of possibility that they could possibly check in at the boards on their birthday. The message board has a built in birthday notification that automatically lists birthdays down toward the bottom of the first page. When you see those member names, before starting a thread for them it is a good idea to take a look at their profile and see how long it has been since they have posted. I think if a member hasn't posted for a long long time it is enough of a birthday recognition for them to have their name listed on the home page with the other birthdays for that day. Special birthday threads should be an honor for active members, or members that have been active in the past, or relatives or friends of active members that will at least hear about it through another member.

That makes sense. I just thought, you know, on the off chance that an inactive member checks in it might make them want to be active again if they see we've been thinking of them. But I completely understand your point of view too. I will respect whatever you decide on this.

Well...I think if you look at their profile first, and if they haven't been around in two years or more, they probably aren't going to stop in. It's possible, but if they do they will still see their name on the birthday list, and if they post we will see that and then we can make more of an issue of their birthday. To me, having a birthday thread is somewhat of an honor, and it should be more for our active, or at least occasionally active, members.
This is just how I've always thought of it. But I'm certainly open to hearing what everyone thinks about this.

^A PM is a good solution to that. If they do return, the PM will be there forever for them to see and know that someone was thinking of them on their birthday!  |

That's a good idea, dl. It is a bit more than having it in the automatic birthday section, but yet doesn't clutter up the boards.

It's definitely not a bad thing to think of others on their special day but a good rule of thumb is if you've never even heard of the person or if their name doesn't even look familiar, they probably aren't going to be popping around much! A friendly PM is definitely a smart thing to do though! |

I have a cute idea for birthday celebrations for the guild members who ARE ON THE BOARDS and ARE ACTIVE MEMBERS. Well when it's time for a birthday , if someone can tell me, I can make a birthday party graphic. It would be called for example:
BUNNYS BIRTHDAY PARTY
I would then make invitations and send them out to all of Bunny's guild friends ( the active weekly members )
Then I would create a graphic that looks like the setting of a birthday party and I would take a few select neopets from our lookup pages and they would be in attendance and showing up in the graphic at the party. I woudl also make the party theme alot like the userlookup or like somethng I know the party girl or boy likes. There would be gifts in the graphic atop a table, and a banner saying Happy Birthday, it would be a scenic sort of thing for us to enjoy virtually. But it would be a way to have a birthday party on the boards for our neopets to attend and enjoy! Then people could drop by this Birthday Party Thread and bring a gift, in which they would buy the birthday boy or girl a present for their neopet world. We would post the gifts just like we do individually in your own post reply. Also, we could do a pitch in and you bring your favorite birthday pass along dishes or dish to share, and those also would be posted for all to see and would to the birthday boy or girl. So when you post your gift, you also post your food or drink you bought. ( all presents and food goes to birthday boy or girl) I mean it would be a virtual birthday party on the boards for our neopets to attend, and a way to give neo birthday presents too!! If there was more than one birthday in that month we would have one party for all the people and we would split the gifts, or bring more than one for each person and put name tags on the presents. The birthday parties would be posted a week before the first birthday in that month Months, not the day of, this would give ample time for all to see and celebrate and attend!! Butyou wouldn't bring your gift and food until the day of that birthday. The invitations will have the time on them. So those who can be here on the board at that time will do theparty together then. But for thsoe who can'tbe there right then, the party thread will be open and it can go on so everyone has a chance to stop by the party. It sounds like fun to me.

I would have to have a list of birthdays for all active members about the birthdays so I know when to start making stuff... But I would love to be the Guilds Party Planner!!
I also have some party ideas for NON-Birthday guild parties
MORE PARTY PLANNING
We could even do other parties to. Based on what month it is, I could plan a guild Party every month. For instance June, we could have a Luau, we could all bring one tropical summer dish or food or drink ( from neoworld), we could just paste the pictures into the boards for fun so you don't have to really purchase anything like you would at a birthday party. It would be more of a fun finding a great food item or drink item and just bring it to the boards for the Luau for people to see not to really have. We could have a Party game to play to win real prizes. Such as fill in the blank to this Hawaiian Classic Song, or some other Hawaiian Trivia Question in which you can use your computer to resaerch the questions. ( the game would be posted at the time of the party on the invititation) and the first person/thread reply to come with all the right answers would win a party bag. ( we would then give them party bag kind of prizes we can find on neopets, maybe some bubbles, candy, and silly spray, toys, whatever we can find that would be party bag stuff) stuff like that.
But we would only do the months that favor a holiday, and or one seasonal party per season. Keep in mind when I do make a PARTY GRAPHIC that if I go to your userlookup to copy a picture of your pet to add into the party, if you have one of your pets dressed accordingly to the holiday of the month, I will copy that pet and it will appear in the party graphic...so this brings even more artistic flare forus all, we can then make sure that we dress our pets for the parties ( I will not be sopying anythign other than the pet itself with it's clothes, NO BACKGRNDS, OR FURNTIURE)

February- Valentines Party
March- PARTY FREE- maybe there would be a birthday this month
April- Easter Party
May- PARTY FREE- I know my birthday is this month, so that's a birthday party there
June summer luau Party
July- 4th of July party
August- NOTHING ( Maybe there is abirthday)
October Halloween Party
November Thanksgiving Party
Decemeber Christmas Party
I know it sounds like alot, but it's doable pretty easily. I would open my own thread and need a list of birthdays for ACTIVE/ DEDICATED MEMBERS ( so those with rank or those who we see throughout the year) Why have a celebration party for non-active members. This service is for those who are dedicated to this guild. Once we get this going, It could then make the guild even more apealing to newcomers!
Hey DL- Is there any way you Know of to add a song to a thread. Like a happy birthday Gif??Or any other gifs for the themed

That sounds like a great idea, Kari. All birthdays automatically show up on the guild calendar, which can be accessed by clicking on the icon at the top of the page.
Will you have time to start something like this now, or is it better for you to wait until October? It would be fine to wait until then to get it started when you have more free time. Or you can just play it by ear and see when you start having some extra time.
I'd be glad to help you with this. We could put a section about our birthday parties on the website, too. Kind of do a feature shot from each party so we have a history on the website too, the way we have a history of the member of the month...what their award was, etc. It think that would make a really colorful addition to the website, and might be a good feature to bring in new members. Very few guilds do things like that.

It depends on Kari. Right now she seems to busy to do any guild things, so I suppose we will wait and see unless someone else wants to run with this idea.
