Hey guys,
So Sunday at 2am we had to evacuate our home due to a fire that started raging. By the time we left our home the fire was literally across the street and blowing flaming embers on our rooftop. We had to leave so there's no way of knowing if our home is even still there. The good news is that we all got out and are safe and sound.
Nfty and I are staying with her parents. The fire roared on over last night too and the Santa Ana winds picked up and made things a lot worse spreading the fire into more devleoped areas so everything right now is a big dangerous question mark. Anyway, just in case you see things on the news about Sylmar fires, Becca and I are just fine and waiting on pins and needles for information and the go ahead to return home.

Wow, that's so close to your home; that's really scary! I'm glad you two are safely at Nfty's parents'. I hope you can be moving back in, and nothing is badly harmed.

We had the most amazing luck in terms of the evacuation. I was actually with my brother at Unviersal Studios for the Halloween Horror Nights that they do so we didn't get home until about 3:00am. The fire by that point was almost visible from our home and about 10 minutes after we got home, the police pulled into our drive way to tell us that mandatory evacuation was in effect. I'd already started packing by that point though. I didn't waste a precious second, I pulled all the photo albums, unhooked my computer, grabbed my back up CDs and external back up harddrives and got this all into the car. Each trip to the car I'd get a guage on the fire as it inched over the hills towards us. Then we went for important documents, receipts, passports etc. After that was safe in the car, we pulled out suitcases and threw in a bunch of clothes, put all the jewelry into plastic bags, filled up water bottles, and got toothbrushes (forgot deoderant and hair products, >.<). By this time, the fires were still inching nearer and were partly visible over the hills nearest our home. We took that time to go through and pull out our VHS and camcorder tapes of home movies and threw those into bags and then into the car. After that, we managed to still have some time as the fires were not poking over the hill-tops nearest our home, we picked through our DVDs and selected some of our more favorite ones (rather hurredly of course) and then snagged up a few other little special mementos and trinkets of value. We gave the house a once over, picking up other little miscellaneous things, gave it a few more once overs and then turned off all the lights (we don't have gas power so nothing to turn off in that regard) powered everything down and got into our cars. By this time the fire was already climbing over several of the mountain/hilltops nearest our home and huge gusts of wind were blowing flaming embers over the yard and on the roof. It was frightfully scary but we made it down the safe road and made it safely away from the fire zone!! We were so blessed to have those two or three hours to pack many others didn't even have 10 minutes to get to safety so we're just so thankful that we went to the Halloween Horror Night otherwise we would have been fast asleep and not known anything until about 30 minutes before we HAD to leave!!! Now here's to hoping that our home is still there!

That sounds so awful. I'm glad you did have enough time to save irreplaceable items though. Furniture and things like that can be replaced but photos and home movies can't. Have you heard any news about how things went in your area? Maybe your home will be intact. I hope so.

You are lucky in that regard, that you were able to save a lot of prized possessions. I really hope nothing else you own is damaged. Keep us updated if you can.

Glad to hear that you had enough time to get you precious items from the house. Have you heard any thing yet as far as the condition of the House?

Both of you were really lucky to get all your valuables out in time! I'm very glad to here that =D. In the past few years we have had some close calls with fires too and I always started packing important stuff when it was getting close to our house. But every time the firefighters got the fire under control before it destroyed any houses near here. Hopefully Dl and Becca will have the same luck!

It's just amazing the work that firefighters do. We were allowed back into our home last Thursday. It was surreal to drive through the mountains and seeing them devoid of any plants... just black dirt and black remnants of twigs, branches, and trunks. The fires were so close to so many homes and yet they were completely saved. We're so blessed to still have our home and we're so thankful and happy.
Sorry it took me so long to post the update on this... I've been so busy. Cleaning through the fire made me realize how much JUNK I have and don't need so as soon as I got home, instead of unpacking and moving stuff back in, I started cleaning OUT and throwing away stuff I don't need. It's a big undertaking and then on top of that I've been super busy with MouseInfo stuff too! >.<

Here's two pics from about an hour before we left... by the time we left the fire was well over the mountain and super close. Huge gusts of wind were blowing flaming embers on our yard and rooftop... Would have snapped some of the fire right by the house but it was SCARY close when we left so just up and LEFT.

I'm so glad to here that your house is ok Dl! I was so worried because all I saw on the news was houses burning every time I turned on the TV. They only like to report on the bad stuff it seems =p.
