This year I think I'm going to celebrate Hanukkah instead of Christmas.
I like to be different.

Hanukkah is the celebration of lights. It symbolizes the time during the war where there was only enough oil to light the soldiers lamps for one night but ended up lasting 8 nights. That's why we light the menorah for 8 nights from left to right.
The presents represent the same thing, the celebration for nights. We also play the dreidel which used to be payed with real money but now it's chocolate coins.
Hope that helps! Tonight is the first night!

on the calendar we have in my renters basement its spelled with a C instead of an H....but has to be the same holiday! i knew basically about the oil lasting longer than it was suppose to have lasted....but wasn't sure what traditions were used with this holiday....i knew about the lighting of the menorah and the dreidel but didn't know how it was played or what that you got something from playing...and i didn't know you had a certain way to light the candles....thats neat....what do you do on night 1 or is it you play with the dreidel each night? and light a candle? do you blow out the candle each night or let it burn til it goes out? and so on?

We never blow out the candles. We light one candle for each night until they are all lit. We usually get the most presents on night one and then little ones on the following nights. Some people do it differently. They don't always play driedel or eat potato pancakes.

Sorry ... busybusy this week. I had such good intentions!
I was raised Catholic and Christmas is "my" holiday. But I think it's a good thing for the Guild to expand -- we need male guardians! We need to learn about other holidays and traditions!
<-- stepping down off soapbox
Some of my favorite memories have been gatherings with friends. Several years ago, the beginning of Hanukkah overlapped with our Thanksgiving celebration and I was privileged to witness the beginning of the annual celebration. It was every bit as moving and significant as Christmas is to Christians. There were prayers and songs I didn't understand, but the love and bonding was irresistable.
Neopets doesn't have much in the way of non-Christmas holiday items, so I hope I'll be forgiven for the gifts in this thread. The intent is sincere.

The first night's gifts go to Nfty (of course!). She gets: a stripy spinning top (sorry, I searched all of Neopia but there was no dreidel to be found), fried potato balls (a cross between latkes and matzoh?), chocolate silver coins, and a frozen snowflake coin. Happy Hanukkah, however you spell it!

And tonight's gifts go to Dlfreak: wooden shoyru spinning top, and chocolate silver coins.

Happy first day of Hanukkah everyone!!! Congrats to nfty and dl on their new items!!! In high school I had a boyfriend that celebrated Hanukkah and I got to participate in some of his family's traditions. Usually they would make an all Kosher meal, play dreidel with chocolate gold coins, and sing some songs in Hebrew(kinda like singing carrols I guess). It was really neat to experience a different holiday for once. =)

So how do you play the dreidel? Do you spin it and then see where it points when it stops or what do you do? I've never actually seen anyone play it.

You spin it till it lands on its side and each side means something different I think, like how many coins you get. I might be wrong though I haven't played in like 4 or 5 years.
